Future VSP Courses

J. Hathaway is now on the Mathematics Faculty at Brigham Young University-Idaho. Around his academic calendar he can provide company-specific training if desired. We anticipate offering one to two VSP-UXO course annually. One potentially in the spring and one between July 15th and August 31st each year. If you would like to host a VSP course or have company specific course needs use the “email us” link to contact him.

Training Background and History

With J. Hathaway’s and Brent Pulsipher’s transition from PNNL, we have not offered UXO courses for over 18 months. PNNL’s VSP-UXO module transition funding provided by ESTCP has also ended (thank-you ESTCP for the great support over the last 8-9 years). With this funding completion, UXO related VSP courses will not be free to the students participating.

Initial VSP training was sponsored by the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the early development of VSP. From there the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and Department of Defense (DoD) have also sponsored courses focusing on the modules and statistical designs developed for their needs. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) continues to sponsor courses for agreement states and NRC staff through PNNL. Most of the government funding training classes can be found on the VSP website.

J. Hathaway continues to provide DoD specific training for VSP modules related to UXO and explosive constituents contamination. He offers 1-2 courses a year through Data Driven or in collaboration with PNNL.

Brent Pulsipher continues to provide general VSP training through a multi-day course that covers how to maneuver in VSP and most of the modules not related to UXO. Individuals can register for these courses on a fee basis. Depending on demand these courses occur 4-8 times a year.

Course Details

We are pleased to announce a VSP-UXO training course focused on the modules that are pertinent to unexploded ordnance and incremental sampling (ISM) for explosives and metals. This course will include methods and tools for transect design, target area identification and delineation, anomaly density mapping and estimation, verification of UXO cleanup and provide an overview of our Incremental Sampling tools being developed under ESTCP. The new and updated VSP modules for Remedial Investigation (RI) and anomaly density mapping (geostatistics) will be used in this course. The two-day agenda for the course provides further details on the instruction.

This will be an intensive hands-on course where each participant will be required to bring his or her own laptop with the latest version of VSP loaded. No previous VSP experience is required. Due to the hands-on nature of this course, seating will be limited to no more than 25 participants.

VSP is a software tool that supports the development of a defensible sampling plan based on statistical sampling theory and the statistical analysis of sample results to support confident decision making. VSP couples site, building, and sample location visualization capabilities with optimal sampling design and statistical analysis strategies. VSP is currently focused on design and analysis for the following applications.

  • Environmental Characterization and Remediation
  • Environmental Monitoring and Stewardship
  • Response and Recovery of Chemical/Biological/Radiation Terrorist Event
  • Footprint Reduction and Remediation of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Sites
  • Sampling of Soils, Buildings, Groundwater, Sediment, Surface Water, Subsurface layers, and Items.
